Each February for the past 17 years, the Shoot Down Cancer Foundation, founded by Beth and David Catalana, has hosted a boys basketball tournament with all of the proceeds going to the Oncology Division of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. For the first 13 years, this was known as the Olympic-Cape Challenge, as we matched teams from the Olympic Conference and the Cape Atlantic League.
In 2015 we changed the event to include other schools and changed the event to the Shoot Down Cancer Classic.
CHOP has a special place in the hearts of the Catalana family, as our son Garrett was treated there 21 years ago for a childhood cancer known as neuroblastoma. Garrett is now a healthy 22-year old college graduate and we use this tournament and its proceeds as a way to give a small part back to the hospital that did so much for our son.
